Barry Rowatt

A qualified industrial mechanical and production engineer and professional procurement practitioner specialising in MRO, Building, Plant and Facilities Management, Premises ‘Fit-Out’ and CAPEX Equipment / Construction spend categories with experience across a broad range of industry market sectors.

I have been a self-employed interim consultant over the last ten years undertaking procurement and consultancy assignments in both the public and private sectors for a client base that includes; NHS, AbbVie Inc., Diageo, COLT Data Centre Services, Abbott Laboratories Inc., HSBC, Metropolitan Police Authority, Virgin Media, Carillion FM, Pfizer Inc., BAA plc.

I apply my skills and expertise to deliver successful procurement projects through the implementation of best practise category sourcing tools and techniques and supplier management principles to identify optimal procurement strategies that leverage demonstrable savings and quantifiable ‘value add’ opportunities for my clients.

Whilst able to manage complex procurement projects and deliver savings in the majority of indirect spend categories my areas of specialist knowledge and expertise lie in the following categories:

Maintenance, Repair and Operations Spares [MRO]

There are multiple MRO business models in operation in the UK. MRO ‘Integrator’ solutions providing managed inventory services including logistics and stores, ‘Self-Service’ electronic catalogue providers with hosted web portal platforms and client self-managed product/component ordering solutions through multiple suppliers. The MRO supply market has developed and evolved internationally to service all these options.

MRO purchases are necessary to keep the business running seamlessly. In some types of businesses such as those operating out of a commercial office block these may be quite small with many purchases made on a regular basis, whilst in the context of a manufacturing and production environment, MRO is additionally used to describe goods or equipment that are part of a manufacturing process but not incorporated in the final product of that process, and the overall spend can be significant.

MRO items include consumables (such as cleaning, laboratory, or office supplies), industrial equipment (such as compressors, pumps, valves) and plant upkeep supplies (such as gaskets, lubricants, repair tools), and computers, fixtures, furniture, etc.
