Office Depot’s decision to sell off its European business to the Aurelius Group will probably, initially, have a zero effect on the consumer in terms of product sourcing and supply. Long term there has to be a concern for pricing agreements and supply chain issues as Aurelius is an investment company and will look to recover their investment from an industry that is unknown to them.

Currently SPOT (Spicers and Officeteam) and EVO (VOW and Banner) are owned by VC’s so here is another investment company controlling a very large reseller – which is a concern for the Office Supplies Industry.

This may not be good news for Office Depot vendors, some of whom rely on them for a large percentage of their business. Consolidation within the industry will ultimately leave the consumer with limited choice of product and supply.
