Today’s Budget saw the Chancellor give a funding boost to the Environment Agency to clamp down on businesses that carry and dispose of waste illegally.

In case you aren’t aware, environmental regulations state that every business that produces waste, no matter where it is based in the UK, has the responsibility for managing it properly. This includes ensuring that the suppliers that collect the waste are authorised to do so and the disposal location is properly permitted. Your business is at risk of prosecution with the possibility of a fine if found guilty in court of failing to follow these requirements.

Many businesses are unaware that they may be flouting these regulations. It is important to appoint suppliers that operate legally, to keep appropriate records of their compliance and to monitor their actions. Failure to do this may lead to a risk of prosecution.

Today’s announcement sees an extra £30m given to the Environment Agency to clamp down on non-compliance.
